Character: Rose Royalis; Artemis
Description of World: Rose comes from a place called Nitidus where religion rules over all. There is no such thing as an atheist because gods and demons walk among the people and perform miracles daily. Everyone is born under the protection of a god or goddess and live out their days paying tribute. They wear a symbol of their god somewhere on their person, a tattoo of sorts that they are born with. When the gods are pleased, there is peace. When the gods are angry, punishment is inevitable. For the most part, while the people serve their gods, the gods also look out for their people. But just as it is anywhere else: where there is power, there is also corruption. A code of laws binds the gods and goddesses, and those that break it for any reason are stripped of their abilities and banished to a place equivalent to hell.
The technology is sub-par and underdeveloped: no televisions, no computers, no phones, etc. But this is balanced by the gods’ abilities which provide similar luxuries on their own. The architecture and the culture are rich, vaguely reminiscent of the ancient Greeks and Romans but slightly better developed, and the standard of living is high due to the gods’ blessings. People are generally happy, and if they’re not, the gods are there to hear about it.
A hierarchical caste system does exist, however. The gods and goddesses are above any sort of category, having no one to tell them what they can and can’t do other than each other. At the top are the high priests and temple maidens, then soldiers, then artisans and laborers, and lastly the Others. While it sounds more or less like any other ancient organizational structure rather than a caste system, it can be considered as such because these three main categories are greatly isolated from one another. By actual walls. An artisan may never speak to a high priest in all his life, even if he is working for one. And no one would even want to be associated with one of the Others.
The Others are people who don’t follow the gods’ wills and often burn off the symbol of their god as an act of defiance. They are usually not allowed within the cities at all, setting up camps in the wilderness and having to fend for themselves without the gods’ blessings.
Personality: Rose is just a bit more complicated then she gives herself credit for. Not only does she have two separate personalities rattling around in her head, but each of those personalities can be difficult to decipher if you don’t know what you’re looking for.
Rose - Rose is a fairly chaotic and paradoxical person. The way she acts and the things she feels depend highly on who she is interacting with. She has a raging authority problem but has quite the soft spot for little kids. She doesn't take many things seriously, but when she is faced with personal issues, past happenings, or events that remind her of such things, she gets serious fast. Really fast. More often than not, she will treat people she is not fond of as if they were long-time friends, teasing them and being all around friendly with them. But few truly gain her respect and admiration, and, strangely enough, this respect usually doesn’t require a person to earn it and is simply automatic. But even those few who earn her respect are often subconsciously pushed aside, only graced with light-hearted, shallow conversation and never truly breaking through her protective mental barriers. A person can usually tell what she thinks of them by listening to how she says their name. If she gives you an affectionate nickname, it means she hates your guts.
Through the years, she has adopted a crude sense of humor and a complete lack of self-control. Her manners are atrocious, her demeanor ever sarcastically humorous, and her opinions, no matter how vulgar, openly stated. She does not seem to understand that society comes with societal norms, and her lack of inhibitions often makes her seem border-line criminally insane. The fact that she openly informs people what the voice inside her head is thinking does not help. Despite all of this, if a person really got to know her, they would see a sort of pinned down loyalty, selflessness, and innocence that would otherwise never break the surface.
Artemis - Artemis is the former goddess of the hunt, her full title being Artemis, The Huntress. She is extremely lazy and arrogant, hardly ever coming out unless she thinks she’s going to have fun. Her type of fun, however, is always at the expense of others. There was a reason she was banished from godhood, but unlike the most common reason – greed – hers was slightly more hostile. To describe her as arrogant may just be an understatement. She sees humans not as humans, not as animals, not even as scum. To her, they are playthings. And she has found infinite amusement in poking and prodding them until she can find their Achilles’ heel and exploit it. After obliterating both armies in the midst of a battle, the other gods and goddesses finally deemed her a demon and banished her to hell.
She has an enormous and disturbing obsession with blood. Whether it’s someone else’s or even her own, she finds it to be the most beautiful thing in the world, especially when it’s spewing out unhindered. She’ll drink it, spread it over her skin, bathe in it, anything. It’s ecstasy for her. This obsession only fuels her bad habits, and more often then not, she’ll only take over their shared body if she knows there’s going to be a fight. If she comes out, and there isn’t a fight, you can expect her to start one as soon as she is able.
Although she professes pretty much everyone but herself to be worthless, she is not above garnering the aid of others if she thinks the outcome will be amusing. However, the likelihood of her showing anything less than contempt even for her allies is small. The only person she has ever gone out of her way to protect is Rose herself, and Rose has subsequently attached a strange fondness to her that defies all logic and moral standings.
Background: Artemis was one of many goddesses who roamed Nitidus, her symbol being a stylized bow and arrow branded in red upon her upper right arm. Her subjects praised her, served her, and in return she taught them how to hunt and filled the forests with game.
Slowly, however, she became bored of this and offered them a new type of prey: themselves. Hunters became soldiers and fought against each other, and Artemis became the originator of war on her world. She never took credit for it, of course. That would make her look bad. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t enjoy it. In fact, she often took part in it, donning disguises of normal soldiers or generals to appease her craving for blood. But when she annihilated two complete armies who had been fighting each other, the other gods could no longer allow her to move freely. They stripped her of her symbol and her power, and they banished her to eternal damnation.
Her final words were, “It’s not hell unless it’s forever.”
Naturally, they thought she was nuts because hell was forever. But Artemis awaited her chance, and eventually it came. She slaughtered a demon (which was thought to be impossible since demons and gods are supposed to be immortal) and converted it into a soul. When the soul was born back into Nitidus, she followed suit.
Thus she was reincarnated as a second entity within Rose Royalis’ body. Rose was technically born into a high class, but it was obvious that she was tainted. Her soul had come from a demon’s, and so she was born without a god’s symbol on her body. Her parents tried to hide this as long as they could, but finally the gods found out and they were forced to either give her up or sneak her away. When she was only three years old, they sent her to a nearby camp of Others to hide. The gods were furious that their subjects would make such a move behind their backs, and several soldiers and bounty hunters were sent to find the small child. Most of the Others weren’t exactly thrilled about this. If by searching for the girl, the soldiers found one of the Others’ camps, they’d be flushed out for punishment as well. Not long after she’d been abandoned by the cities, she was abandoned by the outcasts as well.
Her stop and go, lonely and hectic lifestyle led her to quickly become aware of Artemis’ existence, and without the goddess’ aid, she never would have survived. Despite her twisted ways, Artemis had soon become more or less the closest thing to a mother figure Rose ever had, and her guidance was what shaped Rose into the young woman she slowly became.
For the most part, Rose has had no one but Artemis to stay by her side. Several times, she attempted to integrate into the small, nomadic camps the Others often created, but if they weren’t simply disgusted by her, they were downright frightened of Artemis or the other gods who were still looking for her. Becoming close to people became a complete impossibility for her simply because she had no one to get close to, and she never had a chance to learn how. She has, however, learned how to manipulate people into doing what she wants and making herself seem harmless when she’s anything but.
Back on Nitidus, she was just beginning to gain a reputation for her decision to begin pirating, stealing supplies being delivered to the gods as tributes. But before she’d even managed to get enough gold coins to swim in (she’d always wanted to be able to do that, after all), she woke up to a whole new world. And Artemis had finally found herself some interesting new prey to play with.
Abilities/Additional Notes: Rose herself is only human, but she’s fast, agile, and flexible, and she knows how to make a deadly weapon out of almost anything. She’s decent with ships, and she’s stooped to pick-pocketing enough that she can put her “magic” fingers to work if need be. She’s an excellent thief and an even better liar. If she is extremely angry or upset, she can sometimes channel Artemis’ abilities.
Artemis, when she surfaces, has the ability to materialize her own personal bow and arrows which are a brilliant red all the way through and are rumored to be dyed with the blood of her subjects that she slaughtered, though the truth is likely different because the color never fades. The arrows can dent iron, and her aim is perfect. Her speed, strength, and senses are all heightened as well, and she can understand and communicate with flora and fauna to a certain extent. But because she is within a human body, she is unable to regain the full extent of power she held as a goddess. That, however, doesn’t mean her punches won’t still hurt. Because they will.
